I was raised on McDonald’s and Burger King. It’s been years since I have touched anything from either establishment but it’s safe to say that I have eaten my fair share of burgers in my almost 40 years of life.
And I like a good burger and have created children who are certified “Burger Snobs” lol! When Five Guys debuted a decade ago, I sung their praises. Still, to this day, I frequent Flip Burger in Buckhead and do not let a single visiting friend who comes to Atlanta leave without tasting one of their gourmet, “boutique” burgers.
However, they now have formidable competition. This past year, I stumbled upon Ted’s Montana Grill here in Atlanta. I had never heard of them before but decided to give them a try…and it was such a well thought out burger. The atmosphere is pleasant and peaceful yet it doesn’t feel stuffy and it’s kid friendly. Here you’ll see that Ted Turner and his partner believe in sustainability and recycling to help the Earth. You can learn more about the mission of the restaurant here.
Recently my oldest daughter got her first car and chose Ted’s as the place to go for lunch. And she too is a burger connoisseur so we jumped at the chance.
Now it had been a while since we’d eaten there and I wasn’t quite sure where Ted’s stood on my Burger List. Boy did they come through big time! The burgers were amazing! Priding themselves on fresh beef and bison– NEVER frozen — Ted’s Montana Grill showed us how a meat-eater could and should combine health and taste. How many restaurants do you know that grind their own meat, hand cut their own potatoes, hand bread their own onion rings, and make all of their own sauces & dressings?! Not to mention you won’t find a microwave or freezer being used for any of their meals.
First of all, customers have the option to order most of the items on the menu as beef or bison. To complement the cow, they offer his more tender and delicious big brother. Think filet mignon made as a patty. So we’re talking no antibiotics, solely grass fed, and a whole other level of lean meat. Ted’s aim is to take care of the environment while understanding that we, as humans, are predominantly carnivores and need our protein. Think paleo-diet with a side order of fries. And even those were not deep fried greasy potatoes! Every juicy entre they serve is made in house and never frozen. The only reason they have a freezer is for the Haagen Dazs ice cream!
My big girl, who will pull over for any place that says “burger”, ordered the “Delicious Duo duo” which is served with two 3 oz burgers (beef and bison), American cheese, lettuce, tomato and a dill pickle on a brioche bun. She, of course, added the fries and coke for the overall “burger joint” experience.
My I-can’t-believe-he’s-going-to-Junior High son is more predictable but has expensive taste. He had the courage to order a Bison Cheeseburger with American cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce with a side of fries. He also snagged his usual Root Beer float with gluten free Haagen Dazs ice cream! This is the same kid who will order a steak at lunch, if we don’t check him.
Here’s a pic of him taking a big ole bite.
Normally, I’m adventurous when it comes to my burgers. I’ll try anything that sounds awesome. So why stop now!!!
My go to order is the Red Rock Beef Burger which is served with Pepper Jack cheese, jalapeño, cilantro, onion straws and Z-Sauce on ciabatta. For me the spice of the burger is the star of the show. You may have the Z-Sauce if you want to but for me it’s reminds me of a raspberry jam and cools off the tang of the burger too much for me so I leave it on the side. Since I was going to have this massive Delmonico Ribeye with an order of 50/50 Hand Cut Fries and Salt & Pepper Onion Rings, I decided to kick things off with the kale salad as my appetizer. I have a girlish figure to maintain and it gets harder the closer that you get to 40 (lol)! Plus if I was you I would save room for the Strawberry Shortcake made with fresh made biscuits, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and of course strawberries and piled up like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
It’s great to have one restaurant that is concerned about the environment, serves good food and creates a family atmosphere all at the same time.
Until August 12th, if you visit your local Ted’s and take a selfie enjoying your favorite burger and posting it on Instagram or Twitter with #TedsBurgerSelfie you’ll be entered to win one of several prizes with the grand prize being a Big Green Egg. Good Luck!
